Some rate this Ki-Gor adventure as one of the better ones of his long tenure in Jungle Stories, I am not as inclined. It is a fast-moving, capably written (if you ignore the fact that orangutans are NOT native to Africa!) adventure yarn. It has great bits of fan service. Helene goes skinny-dipping and is spotted by several natives dedicated to ridding the jungle of Ki-Gor, Helene, and eventually, all white men. She escape from them naked, her doeskin bra and panties held in her teeth. My problem with this adventure is that it, more than most Ki-Gor adventures, is a product of its time. Written during the height of WWII Ki-Gor discovers "evil Japs" right out of a WWII propaganda film in the heart of his jungle. Naturally, they are described as "yellow" and "monkey men." Stories like this are fine during war time but once the bullets stop flying ... If you can put aside a great deal of harmful stereotypes and derogatory language, you may have some fun with this vintage novel. The Leopard King is certainly a worthy villain. His intentions are clear that after he eliminates Ki-Gor, Helene will be subjected to "a fate worse than death." and his plan of using metamphatimines to control his duped population IS straight out of the Nazi military playbook. I world rank this as a slightly better than average Ki-Gor adventure. Without the racism, it would rate higher.

My review of The Monkey Men of Loba-Gola I love Ki-Gor and I have a major crush on Helene his flame haired, blue-eyed mate. What do you know, a Ki-Gor title that actually coincides with the story! Ki-Gor leads Helene to a new home, a series of interconnected caves on a cliff face. Since the site has a bad reputation, Ki-Gor and Helene’s Bantu porters bug out, forcing the jungle couple to leave just about everything Helene had purchased behind. No sooner does this happen than Ki-Gor and Helene have to battle crocodiles. This encounter leaves Helene clad in just rags, the remnants of a shirt and pants. Various doings lead to their capture by a forgotten colony of displaced Europeans on a forbidden mountain. Their queen, a mixed race beauty, typically for these stories, has the hots for Ki-Gor and wants him for a mate. She is also in league with a repulsive Nazi who is given Helene as his prize for loyalty. Will she be torn from her true love? Will Helene find any suitable clothes? Earlier the bad guys flogged a woman and stripped her to the waist first. Does the same thing happen to Helene under similar circumstances? Not all of these questions are answered in this sub-par Ki-Gor adventure. Entertaining but it teases at a much better story that simply never arrives. Three stars if I’m being charitable.

My review of “Ki-Gor and the Forbidden Mountain” which first appeared the spring 1940 issue of “Jungle Stories.”” What do you know, a Ki-Gor title that actually coincides with the story! While some rate this story highly, I found it full of unpleasant racial stereotypes. While it has all the earmarks of a great Ki-Gor adventure, mysterious adversary, Helene skinny-dipping and escaping from the bad guys naked, holding her doe skin bra and panties in her teeth, and Ki-Gor overwhelmed by assailants; the villains are racist stereotypes of the worst sort. I realize that this was first published in 1944. Propaganda in war time is one thing but once the bullets stop flying... Naturally, the Japanese bad guy is described as yellow and monkey like! Yech! If you can read past the racism, you may have a good time with this novel. If diversity and sensitivity are your thing, this Ki-Gor tale may not be for you.

A review of The Monkey-Men of Loba-Gola.
