It was fortuitously encountering "Red Hands" by Lamb in Return of the Sword that made me read Swords of the West which in turn got me to start really reading historical adventures.

I can't remember, have you read either of Tim Willocks' books, The Religion and The Twelve Children of Paris? They're great, bloody tales.

Flashman probably doesn't hold up too well, particularly where it comes to women. But stylistically, those Musketeer movies are a pretty good visual representation of his literary style. And I don't think there's a single Flashman book where I didn't learn something, resulting in me checking out a lot more books from the library. The McAuslan stories are also very good.

You really should read Fraser's Flashman novels. While the latter books aren't as good, the first ones are great.

While I have some Fraser on my shelf, I regret to say that he's one I've not yet tried. He was involved in my two favorite Musketeer movies (in the '70s), though. I'm not sure the style I've heard he writes in will be quite my cup of tea, but you never know.

At a convention some years ago I handed off a stack of Harold Lamb books to GRRM, thinking he'd enjoy them mightily. I hope he gets around to reading them one of these days.

Nice post Howard. I recently bought a copy of The Big Book Of Adventure Stories edited by Otto Penzler. It looks to be hours of fun reading within its pages.

I've collected quite a few Cecilia Holland books over the years. She should be be more well known.

What are your thoughts on George MacDonald Fraser? I have yet to read anything by him, but George R.R. Martin speaks fondly of his work.
